ABOUT JORENE NEWTON
A childhood meeting with Helen Keller and her understanding of “wonder” encouraged me to share the “wonder” of creativity in my work and my workshops.
I first pursued the field of art at Stephen's College Columbia, Missouri and the University of Texas, which prepared me for later work toward Bachelor and Masters degree in Education from Texas A&I (now Texas A&M at Kingsville, Texas.)
As art teacher in public and private schools in Kingsville, I had the opportunity to develop the art curriculum for high school and middle school levels and to teach a variety of media to my students. Several of my former students are now art teachers and nationally known artists.
Presently I maintain a summer studio in Creede, Colorado and I spend my winters in picturesque Wimberley. Texas. My interest in the “wonder” of the natural resources of Mineral County in Colorado is the basis for my recent contribution, ”History of the Natural Resources of Mineral County,” the newest addition to Ribs of Silver, Hearts of Gold, the Creede Historical Society’s Centennial Series.
While I enjoy working in all media from sculpture, to printmaking, pastels and oil painting, working with water media/collage has been the focus of my art in recent years.
The natural forms of the landscape have always been one of my favorite painting subjects. Sometimes the landscape becomes the subject for paintings that are inspired by my reading. I have created several series based on this method of “inspiration.”
My paintings incorporate mixed water media with collage, drawing media and a variety of acrylic inks and powers with resists and stamps.
For several years I enjoyed incorporating collage in my water media paintings. Pieces of toned and painted handmade and found papers are incorporated into the paintings and often inspire the subject. The tactile quality of “gluing paper to paper’ satisfies a need to get my hands into the painting. By working in a series of one theme, different aspects of a subject can be explored in depth.
One of my most recent series have been weavings of painted or toned paper in which distinctive elements of grasses, rocks, ribbons and various found objects have been incorporated.
My works have been featured in Best of Watercolor II by Northlight books.
