Have you ever realized you reached the end of a home improvement project, finished your own oil change, or done some master gardening, feeling rather proud, really, only to discover you have some yucky toxic chemicals on hand you no longer want or need? Tempted to dump them into the ground?

Fortunately, almost everyone knows that's a terrible idea... and illegal! Still, it's sometimes difficult to know what to do with these nasty waste products.

Hays County and the City of San Marcos are now making it easy for us to do the right thing.

On Saturday, April 30th, you are invited bring your toxic chemicals you no longer need and dispose of them safely. This opportunity, sponsored by the City of San Marcos and Hays County, Texas, will help protect the environment and your health.

Safety Tips:

  • Transport chemicals in trunk of car (or bed of pickup)

  • Keep products in original containers

  • If broken or leaking, place in another container of like material

  • Do not combine chemicals! This may result in a very unpleasant surprise.

Accepted are:

  • Cleaning Products: Drain cleaners, concentrates, degreasers, oven cleaners, solvents, polishers, pool chemicals, household batteries

  • Paint Products: Latex and oil-based paints, spray paints, thinners, strippers, preservatives, brush cleaners, etc.

  • Gardening Products: Pesticides, sprays/dusts, weed killers, rat poisons, insecticides, etc.

  • Automotive Products: Antifreeze, batteries, motor oil and oil filters, brake fluids, transmission fluid, etc.

Not accepted are:

  • Tires

  • Containers larger than 5 gallons

  • Medical wastes

  • Empty containers

  • Compressed gas cylinders

  • Waste generated by businesses

This event is free to all residents of Hays county and the City of San Marcos, but you must provide proof of residency.

Waste collection location is at City Hall parking lot in San Marcos at 630 East Hopkins (see map below).
