The Wimberley Players present On Golden
Pond, Ernest Thompson's classic comedy, March 26 through April 11 at the Greenhouse Theatre in Woodcreek. Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 8:00 PM, and Sunday matinees are at 2:30 PM. On Golden Pond is probably best known in its 1981 film version co-starring Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda, for which Thompson won an Oscar and a Golden Globe award for best screen play of the year.
Directed by Steve Uzzell of San Marcos with Sharon Campbell as Assistant Director and Cindy Larson Producer, this touching and graceful play tells the heartwarming story of Norman and Edith Thayer, a spirited and lovable couple who are spending their 44th summer at their cottage on Golden Pond, a lake in northern Maine. Reviewers have called the drama "a work of rare simplicity and beauty", "a comfortable slice of life", and a "memorable theatrical experience."
Director Uzzell has assembled an experienced and talented cast, several of them new to the Greenhouse stage, to bring this excellent play to Wimberley. Austin resident Bill Phillips stars as Norman Thayer, a retired professor who disguises his shy and sensitive nature with crankiness and bluster. Rebecca Jennings costars in the role of Ethel Thayer, a sweet and supportive woman, full of life, a nature lover, and the stabilizing force in the family. After a lengthy absence, daughter Chelsea, portrayed by Melissa Wells, has returned to Golden Pond for her father's 80th birthday bringing her fiancé, California dentist Bill Ray, played by Rob Sandefur, and his son Billy. Thomas Uzzell of San Marcos is Billy Ray, and Director Uzzell completes the cast as Charlie the mailman who plies his mail route in a boat. Charlie has known the Thayers for years, and his lighthearted behavior provides a welcome contrast to Norman's intensity.
