Wimberley Lions Club Meeting – August 5, 2008

Lion Joe Harrison provided the invocation; Lion Cris Criswell lead the pledge to the flag; and Lion Jim McMeans led us in singing “America”.

Lion Billy Broyles shared a few of his experiences with Vera and then we observed a moment of silence for her passing.

Lion Bill Hull introduced four of the student exchange travelers just returning from Japan, Turkey, and Italy.

Lion Nathan Deans began to twist tails when Lion Don Campbell filed a formal complaint about the defective burnt orange trophy putter purchased at a Lion meeting with guarantees of the equipment’s ability no matter the skills of the operator. Lion Don apparently had planned a scam on some innocent golfers and established a wagering situation under subterfuge. All would have worked except for the defective equipment that he traced the responsibility back to Lion Bill Noles. Tail Twister Nathan devised a plan to test the degree of defectiveness of the equipment with his always-prepared putting green he happened to have on the stage.

Nathan put forth an agreement that the equipment would be certified if both Lion Bill Noles and Lion Pro-Golfer Jim Walker could sink one out of three putts. For the Texas Lions Camp interest, wagering was allowed as the putter’s ability to sink two of three putt attempts. With the wagers heavily against the golfers each sunk a solo putt meaning Lion Don lost his wager and the heavily favored against lost. It was a Win, Win for the Lion Camp.

Lion Boss went around the room for Lions to introduce their guest.

Lion Seba Parish is looking for a Lion to keep track of the sick or hurt.

Lions Frank Curtis and Duanne Redus introduced WHS volleyball Coach Lee Grisham. His teams have won six of the last nine State Championships. He has been named “Coach of the Year”. You can understand this after listening to him as he talks about preparation of his team and his style of leadership. He did say to not expect overwhelming winning streak in the pre-conference play since he had to schedule the top 5A teams in order to get someone to play them.

Lion Jim Mc Means inducted Larry Feinstein into our club. Larry is sponsored by Lion John Lyon.

Lion Jim also announced the contest winners for the last quarter was “The Winners” and Lion Lee Gibson was the individual best recruiter.

Lion John Lyon presented a Texas Lions Camp Life Membership to Brookeshire Brothers General Manager Kent Pursley for his community service.

Lion Dan Williams presented a Texas Lions Camp Life Membership to Lion Frank Puckett for his community service, his Market Day work, and his dedication to Texas Lions Camp.

Lion Jack Bourke announced that the normal pre-market day cleanup will be on Aug 23 this time due to a scheduled X-Country event.

Wimberley Lions Club Meeting – July 15, 2008

New President Frank Williams called the meeting to order. Lion Seba Parish gave the invocation and Lion Jack Bourke led the pledge of allegiance.

Lion Jim McMeans, accompanied by Lion Don Campbell on piano, led the group in singing “My Country T’is of Thee.”

The normal order of the meeting was changed to allow the program to be presented first in order to accommodate our talented guests, the Hill Country Community Band. Under the direction of Dr. Al Corbett, the band presented a wonderful selection of marches and songs, ending with the rousing “Twelfth Street Rag.” Lion Frank Curtis, who introduced the group, ended by saying that it was the first time in years that no Lion had fallen asleep during the program and that all Lions were able to hear everything.

As the band packed their instruments and exited, Tail Twister, Lion Nathan Deans recognized those Lions with July birthdays and led the group in honoring them with song. He then proceeded to auction off a number of items to benefit the Lions Texas Children’s Camp: a mouse pad imprinted with a US flag, a cordless telephone, a case for an I-Phone, a bug zapper and a remote control with giant buttons, suitable for Lions with ageing eyesite.

Lion Boss made the circuit of the room so that members could introduce any guests they had brought.

Lion Seba Parrish noted Lions to be remembered and urged members to let her know of any Lion that is ill or having other troubles so that he/she can be remembered by the club.

Two new members were inducted into the club: Kelly O’Keefe, sponsored by Lion Lee Gibson and James Nelson, sponsored by Lion Bernie Ross.

Lion Don Campbell presented an Outstanding Lion award to Lion Bill Henry for his faithful work as a greeter and his constant cheerfulness. Next the club’s Melvin Jones fellows escorted Lion Lee Coble to the podium and inducted him as the latest recipient of this honor.

Treasurer Scott Brown reported the results of the July Market Day. We had a record July with outstanding performance, even though we worked very short staffed. Congratulations to all members and volunteers for the hard work.

Lion Annette Harrington showed the group the “Weekend in Wimberley” feature that was printed in the Austin American Statesman the week before Market Day. This feature helped bring a lot of visitors to Wimberley for the July 4th activities, including Market Day.

Lion Boss reminded everyone that the Road Warriors would have cleanup duty on July 24.

There will be only one August meeting of the Club – August 5. The speaker for this meeting will be Lee Grisham.
