I'm not sure which is worse - the wasted water mentioned in other forum sites or the waste water at the 1492 low water bridge, reported at 687 e coli/100 ml with high readings at 394. When I cross the bridge, dodging adults, children & dogs, I wonder if they realize that they are playing in a cess pool. I'm sure they're not aware of whatever might lurk in those murky, stagnant waters & they're not informed by their hosts of the potential danger. And, the county health dept isn't going to post a warning sign: Beware - Enter at your own risk.

I know. My son and some of his friends were swimming down there until about a month ago when they realized that it was, as you stated, a cesspool. I heard, and the person that told me may be wrong, that some of the older homes along the river have seepage from old cesspools that are not in compliance and because they are grandfathered in or something, nothing is done about it. I may be totally wrong about this as I am repeating an old-timers warnings regarding the situation. I DO think that anyone owning property, commercial or otherwise, on the river should warn visitors/guests of the dangers. It makes me sick to watch people wading through the muck, not knowing better.

I thoroughly agree that people should be warned but that would discourage tourists & guests at local accommodations. That means loss of money.

The presence of e-coli results reported in the Wimberley View is prepared by the Hays Trinity Groundwater Conservation District (HTGC), phone: 512/858-9253. Please let us know what you find out about this problem.

I tried calling that number, but kept getting a busy signal. I sent an email and they replied promptly. I got a complete download of the same data that are posted in the paper. I am interested in the deep reach just below Pioneer Town. Except for the recent spike, the levels have actually been below the standard consistantly since September 2007 (just after a big flow event). The lesson from the data in that reach seems to be that the levels go high both when flows drop below 6 cfs and rise above 500 cfs.

If anyone is concerned about the e coli levels in a certain section of the river or creek and they are planning to stay at one of our many lodgings, I would call their office prior to arrival to determine exactly how "clean" their water source is. Of course, they may not want to tell you or may "mislead" you or just flat don't know or care.
