Is there anything better than waking up to rain & thunder? The news just said it's in a holding pattern over Wimberley area. About time! Hope it lasts for awhile...like maybe 2 weeks

Just heard that it is supposed to rain on and off in the hill country - a little every day - for up to 1 week - so hopefully... The runoff is amazing - the ground is so hard and dry - hope it gets a chance to all soak in

I've been wondering what it would take to get city of Wimberley or Hays county to give rebates & tax credits for solar & rainwater collection like Austin does. I've seen & read stories of people that have gotten more than half paid for that way. Maybe Wimberley is too small to do this, but it seems something could be done to encourage & help people to become more energy self sufficient. I realize the money would have to come from somewhere, maybe our electric bills. I've been told that's where it comes from in Austin. We would love to be total solar & rainwater, but the cost is so daunting. We're saving up (water first), but would need a new roof for starters & that really adds to cost too. We just got a barrel hooked up to AC drip line & barrel was full in several days. You can get 15-20 gallons of water per day from it. We're using it for garden & plants. Just seems there could be something done to help get people set up. At least our "leaders" could set up requirements for any new building or homes to include rainwater collection. Maybe that's too much logic though...just frustrated about these things. I know if we had same programs here as in Austin, the goal of self sufficiency would be so much more easily attainable. I heard UT is working on a paint that will collect solar instead of panels & is several years down the road, but that sounds promising.[This message has been edited by bren (edited September 09, 2009).]

The City of San Marcos has a rebate program for rainwater collection, only for SM water users.A 300 gal. tank runs a little over $200, and can easily be loaded in a pickup. Not much but it's a start.
