Yesterday afternoon, I saw a caracara on the west side of RR12 just north of Gold’s Road. This was a first for me in this area; I had seen one before, about thirty years ago in the Rio Grande Valley. I was not aware that they traveled this far north. The caracara is a very handsome bird for a carrion eater. This one was having a meal of road kill with his buddies the black vultures.

There used to a couple of them that haunted the road to Kyle just past where it becomes 150. Lots of road kill for a couple of miles there. Lots of deer crossing the road.

I have seen them on RR 12 going towards San Marcos and on Purgatory Road. Glad to know they are back to help with the road kill!

A mystery finally solved...Several years ago, there was a huge nest in one of our cedar trees..it was so high up, I could only see the "critter's" head by using binoculars...I felt certain it was a bird of prey, so took precautions with my small dogs...after seeing a picture of the caracara, with the bright orange head, I knew right away, that's what my "critter" was...the tree fell a couple of years ago and tore the nest up, so I couldn't tell too much about it...

The problem with bird books is that the birds don't read them
