The 24th Annual Wimberley Community Civic Club Home Tour:
The Donna Aldred Home: Rancho Mirando

Sponsored by the Wimberley Community Civic Club, the 2011 Hill Country Homes Tour for the Holidays is Friday & Saturday, November 11th and 12th from 10 AM to 5 PM..

The Donna Aldred Home: Rancho Mirando

Rancho Mirando is stunning example of Spanish mission-style architecture and design. From the 3,000 lavender plants and grove of olive trees, to the artful interiors and breathtaking view from the flagstone terrace, exquisite touches are everywhere. Like Alice in Wonderland you might feel you’ve fallen through the looking glass as you pass through the gates that welcome you to the ranch.

Located on fifty acres overlooking the famous Devil’s Backbone, the interior of the 4,000 square foot home features the soft patina of sun drenched walls and accents evoking turquoise blue water. On the wall to your right as you enter the living area is a portrait of owner Donna Aldred, which looks as if it were painted to match its surroundings. Donna says, however, “It was a happy accident.” It’s probably the only thing that is accidental about this unique home.

Donna and her late husband, Dr. Stephen Aldred purchased the house in 2007 and immediately began making it their own in preparation for their son’s home-based wedding in March 2009. There was a lot of getting ready to do, such as removing exterior walls in the main living area to make room for expansive glass doors. When opened the new doors merge the main living area with the outdoors.

Donna also recruited a friend to create the faux finishes throughout the house, while she and her daughter tackled the kitchen cabinets. Together they created a look that is centuries old.

This home is also a showcase for the owner’s unique pieces of majolica ceramics. Her work has an organic feel and speaks to her love of nature. Donna’s talent goes beyond the potter’s wheel, evidenced by the way she is able to put various styles of furnishings together making it look absolutely right.

And then there are the grounds… a stone grotto pool overlooks the valley below, and beyond this is a spacious outdoor kitchen to envy. There are trails that beckon and an arbor that lures. After your trek through that rambling arbor surely you’ll know just how Alice must have felt.
